The Thirsty Belgian

Hmmmm…let’s see, I don’t really know where to begin this review. Overall it was extremely disappointing. Both in quality and portion size in relation to price. Our daughter dined with us here for lunch today and she wasn’t pleased either. This establishment is built on a great theme. I am sure they must have something tasty because they have been in business for one and a half years. Unfortunately our first visit won’t bring us back for a second one anytime soon.

My husband and I shared the personal cheese plate which was featured just two slices each of cheddar, smoked Gouda and roasted red pepper cheese with 4 crackers for $7.95 . There was half of a thinly sliced pear on the tray too. WHAT?! Nothing spectacular or even remotely distinguishing about the cheese. Bleh. We also ordered the “Belgian” meatballs. They looked exactly like meatballs you would buy in the frozen food section at the grocery store. Exactly the same taste spongy texture. Bleh again. The spicy mustard to dip them in was good. That’s it. I questioned the server and asked if they were made in house. She said they were not. They are bought pre-made and then steamed in one of the ale’s that they serve in the bar with some spices. Honestly, not restaurant quality food. Scott ordered a side of coleslaw. The dressing is pretty good and it is made out of red cabbage instead of green. Our server was very attentive but we did have to flag her down for another beverage and it was not very busy.

Thirsty Belgian Cheese Plate and Meatballs

Mackenzie ordered the “build your own panini”. The price started at $5.95. Before she ordered it she asked the server about it and she stated that depending on what items you decided to put on it (the prices for each item add on where not on the menu) the price usually ends up being between $5.95 and $6.95. Mackenzie added a few things and chose the sourdough instead of the caraway. She asked for sauteed onions and the server went on to explain to us that it wasn’t possible for them to make them because they don’t have a grill, stove, oven or fryer. They have a hot plate, microwave and a steamer. I asked her how they made the meatballs and she said that they were not microwaved but made in the steamer or the pizza oven. She wasn’t specific. Her sandwich was just a sandwich, nothing special and the cost ended up being $9.50. Put the prices on the menu people.

Thirst Belgian Panini

On a positive note- it does have a comfortable atmosphere, reasonable beverage prices and a friendly staff. Maybe the pizza is good? This place is located on the corner of a strip mall off of south Broadway in front of Sports Authority. Enjoy!
